Online casinos in Connecticut offer players a chance to claim several impressive bonuses such as free spins, welcome bonuses, reload bonuses, no deposit bonuses, and cashback bonuses, among others. With these bonuses, you will be able to enjoy more game time. Online gambling in the state of Connecticut is not mentioned in the Connecticut gambling laws, making it legal for residents to engage in online gambling. Connecticut gambling laws do not bar residents from gambling online or even mention online gambling. Connecticut is one of the top candidates to legalize online gambling, and the new year begins with an ambitious bill in the Senate. S 17 would allow the commercial and tribal casinos to offer all forms of internet gambling, including sports betting. The bill would also permit the Connecticut Lottery to roll out an online Keno product. For most people, the language of the law in Connecticut makes it more illegal for someone to operate an online casino within Connecticut’s borders than to play at a casino that is based elsewhere. Long story short, there is nothing that will prohibit you from playing at online casinos in Connecticut.

Furthermore, Connecticut has regulated horse and greyhound racing, as well as a state-operated lottery. It’s worth pointing out that while the state officials don’t seem interested in cracking down on individual players, they are very strict when dealing with illegal gambling operators. Consequently, the number of online options available to Connecticut-based casino enthusiasts is fairly limited.

Connecticut Gambling Laws

Unlike most of the other states, Connecticut has a very broad definition of gambling which doesn’t differentiate between games of skill and games of chance. Gambling is simply defined as any activity that involves betting. This alone would be enough for Connecticut officials to argue that online casino gaming is illegal within the borders of the state, but it’s also worth pointing out that the Connecticut General Statutes Sec. 53-278d prohibit transmission of any gambling-related information:

“Any person who knowingly transmits or receives gambling information by telephone, telegraph, radio, semaphore or other means, or knowingly installs or maintains equipment for the transmission or receipt of gambling information, shall be guilty of a class A misdemeanor.”

Furthermore, you should keep in mind that Sec. 52-553/554 allows Connecticut residents to recover any losses that result from unlicensed gambling via civil action and declares all the relevant wagering contracts to be completely void.

Online Casinos

As you’ve probably already guessed, it’s impossible for a Connecticut resident to play at a regulated, US-based online casino similar to the ones that are available in Nevada and New Jersey. However, many offshore casinos like Bovada accept Connecticut players despite the status of online gambling in the Constitution State. Those casinos get plenty of traffic from all over the world, so it should come as no surprise that the bonuses they offer are more generous than in the case of most intrastate gambling sites.

Offshore Casino Sites That Accept Connecticut Players

Most of the Connecticut-friendly offshore casinos are powered by Real Time Gaming software, but it is worth pointing out that some of them also offer games that have been designed by BetSoft or other companies. All the casinos listed here are 100% safe to play on and have been confirmed to accept new deposits from Connecticut players.

While playing at an offshore casino isn’t that hard if you live in Connecticut, there’s no denying the fact that actually funding your account may get troublesome due to the limited number of deposit methods supported by those sites. In most cases, your best bet is to make a deposit using your credit card. However, not all of the available cards are going to work. In fact, if your card hasn’t been cleared for international transactions, your payment is almost guaranteed to be blocked – and while you won’t lose any money because of that, you won’t be able to join the real money action either.

Some people prefer to circumvent this problem by depositing via a Western Union or MoneyGram money order. This payment method is available on the largest sites, such as Bovada. In fact, if you deposit via a money order, you might be even allowed to cash out using this method instead of the traditional bank wire transfer or check by courier.

Developing Legal Scenarios

Connecticut is one of the states that are expected to start working towards an online gambling bill this year due to the fact that local gambling businesses are getting anxious about being able to offer online versions of their products. However, Connecticut legislators haven’t proposed such a bill yet, which means that the actual launch of a Connecticut intrastate online casino market is very likely to take more than just a few months.

  • $1.7 billion
  • 18 for lottery and bingo, 21 for casinos and racing

Connecticut Gambling dates back to the 1800’s, as it began with harness racing in 1876. These types of events were unregulated until 1976 when racing and Jai Alai was legalized. There are no racing operations in Connecticut these days. Connecticut casinos located at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods drastically reduced demand for the product.

Connecticut also has a state lottery. It offers more games than lotteries in other states. Charitable gaming is also legal in Connecticut. It is heavily regulated to prevent commercial entities from entering the space.

Connecticut Gambling History

Harness racing was the first form of Connecticut gambling. This type of betting went unregulated for 100 years. Charities were the first group to receive an exemption under Connecticut’s gambling laws. Bingo was approved in 1939. Raffles and other games of chance were added in 1955.

The Connecticut Lottery was approved by voters in 1971. The first ticket was sold the following year.

Betting on races became officially legal in 1976, including Jai Alai. This included simulcast races on horses and dogs. The state-operated the racing industry until 1993 when it was sold to Autotote Enterprises. Jai Alai ceased in Connecticut in 2001. That was not because it became illegal. Jai Alai is still permitted to this day. One venue ended Jai Alai and converted to Shoreline Star Greyhound Park. The other was transformed into an off-track betting parlor in 2001.

The last greyhound park in Connecticut closed in 2005. Horse racing has never operated in Connecticut after the 1976 regulation of the industry.

Nonprofits were granted the ability to offer Las Vegas nights in 1972. This allowed charities to offer casino-style gaming and keep the profits. This became the first step towards the legalization of casinos at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

Foxwoods started a commercial bingo hall in 1986. The group decided that under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act it could offer casino games due to charitable gaming laws that permitted casino nights. Foxwoods decided that it would roll out table games similar to those offered by charities in 1992. It reached an agreement with Connecticut Governor Lowell P. Weicker Jr. in 1993 to offer slots. Mohegan Sun joined the tribal gaming industry in 1996.

The two tribes do not pay taxes on table games. This is due to the perception of that form of gambling being legal for charities at the time. The state receives 25 percent in taxes on slot machines and video poker because the games did not fall under the charitable gaming law. The Las Vegas Nights law was repealed in 2003.
